At Native Wylde Screen Printing in Oklahoma City, we see every T-shirt as more than just clothing - it’s a canvas for storytelling, expression, and creativity. Whether you’re designing for your brand, your team, or just for fun, creating custom art for shirts is about transforming ordinary inspiration into something bold, wearable, and completely original.
1. Start with an Idea — Even a Simple One
Art doesn’t have to start perfect - it just has to start. Sometimes, the spark comes from the most unexpected places. One of our favorite experiments began with nothing more than a bottle of ketchup. We spelled out a phrase, letting the sauce naturally bleed and spread. The letters formed soft, organic edges with tiny drips and fades - creating a texture and style that no digital brush could replicate.
This process shows how art is boundless. The more you experiment, the more unique your creations become. Letting your imagination run wild, playing with everyday materials, and embracing imperfection often results in the most memorable designs.
Once your ketchup masterpiece is ready, snap a photo and open it in Photoshop.
From there, the magic happens:
Add a Threshold or Black & White Adjustment Layer + Levels or Curves adjustment to refine contrast.
Use the Color Range tool to isolate your letters and pull them onto a new layer.
Tweak, clean up, and experiment further — and just like that, you have a one-of-a-kind custom lettering style straight from your imagination (and a condiment bottle).
This technique shows that creativity has no limits — the more you push your ideas, the more vibrant and compelling your final shirt designs will be.
2. Bring It to Life Digitally
Once your concept is captured, refine it in design software like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or Procreate. Clean edges, adjust composition, or layer textures to make your artwork pop. At Native Wylde Screen Printing, we make sure each design translates perfectly from screen to shirt, keeping every detail intact.
3. Choose the Right Colors and Fabrics
Color and fabric choice are key in
screen printing. Bright inks pop on dark fabrics, while muted or earth tones give a more organic, textured feel. From soft ringspun cotton to durable blended tees, selecting the right shirt ensures your art looks as good in person as it does on screen.
4. Make It Yours
The most powerful designs come from authenticity. Whether it’s hand-drawn lettering, bold typography, or artwork that reflects culture and heritage, let your personal story shine through. The more you experiment and explore, the more your designs reflect who you are — and that’s what gives your shirt its power.
